I was in NYC recently when I saw a most curious sight: a group of BLIND SIGHTSEERS. They were obviously tourists, decked out in their I LOVE NY T-shirts and their Yankees caps, and they made quite a spectacle, tapping their white-tipped canes and sporting their dark sunglasses. I tell you it gave me pause, seeing those sightless sightseers, and so I decided to follow them for a bit. Their guide was loud and obnoxious, but to his credit he was a veritable fountain of information. Things got even more curious when I drew close enough to hear, for I soon realized he was getting everything wrong. He took them by Rockefeller Center, pointed out the ice rink and said, “That’s where President Grant is buried!” He led them up 5th Avenue and called it the Bowery. Pointing out the Guggenheim he said, “Come back tonight and you can see the Rockettes dance.” He paused for a long time in front of the Apollo in Harlem and finally said in hushed, almost reverent tones, “That’s where the Twin Towers stood. It’s a big hole now; careful you don’t fall in.” And his charges listen in rapt amazement. Read more
